Variousness (which is a word)

It's fall. And for me, it's also somewhat of a break week. (For math and choir at least.) Sigh.

That means I can spend all day studying to get my driver's permit, or reading Roman history.

(Or just, well you know- hanging around on Twitter.) *blush*

But wait! I don't have a Twitter account any more. I deleted it today. Chances are you didn't notice. It's not exactly the most sensational news- "girl spontaneously decides to delete account on social networking site!"

That said, I am a big fan of Twitter, and it does indeed feel funny not to have one anymore. (All you non-Twitter uses have my permission to stop reading now.)

Anyway, it was just a time waster for me. I'll be honest. I think it made me get ADD. (Just kidding. Sort of.)

I'll be honest- I'm keeping my Facebook because I would hate to loose touch with people. Bad excuse, maybe- but if I cut everything off at once things might go downhill.

Moderation in everything, friends!

But back to the break! I needed this break. Not because I was physically or mentally unfit to continue- simply because I needed to focus on a few particular things.

1. My essay on the Aeneid. Superb book. You must read it immediately.
2. My driving permit. Which involves reading the entire DMV handbook in one week and going downtown to take a test where I will possibly contract swine flu while standing in line.

Essays and people like Virgil are superb things. Driving permits are somewhat superb, but DMV centers and swine flu pandemics are not. But you already knew that, right?

As far as recipes go- I have been making things. My mom and I made an excellent banana cream tart for a church potluck a few weeks ago, but my pictures are really, really crummy. Oh well. It tasted wonderful, despite the fact that I was summoned to the desert table to hack it into pieces. I am ashamed of all of you who could not take on a banana cream tart crust! Wimps!

I am excessively happy because one of my photos made it onto the Pioneer Woman Photography site! I don't have time to explain the details, but here's a link to the post if you haven't seen it already. It was pretty weird waking up that Monday morning and seeing a portrait of my sister up there!

I'm thinking about doing a video blog post. Not exactly sure why.....maybe I should just interview my brothers. What do you think?

Also- what do you think of this video? I was amazed. I'm figuring he really did read it- but I'm not exactly sure. (And don't say I'm just jealous because I could read through the entire Western canon if I had his skills. Savor the words, please!)

Ordinariness

I am searching my head for exciting, out-of-the-ordinary things we did today. But I can think of none. So, my readers, you will be forced to read about, well, the ordinary stuff.

So today we:

1. Discovered that younger sister does not like to be sucked with the vacuum cleaner. (I assure you I had nothing to do with this).

2.  Discovered that we really do not like the lyrics of "Away in a Manger." 

3. Pondered whether or not to ostracize the weather man. We were promised five more inches of snow, and we're still waiting...

4.  Made a snow beast. It was a pathetic beast, but still a beast. It was placed on the stone urn on the brick wall in our driveway, until one of the boys dispatched it with a snowball. I'll have to go outside tomorrow and do some forensic work.

5. Constantly checked the temperature outside. 

6. Studied things like the lymphatic system, a biography by Plutarch, and a Bach fugue and prelude. Which need to be memorized by February for a music festival.

7.  Wondered why there's a whole website devoted to the task of persuading the Obamas to adopt an animal from a shelter. This is a mystery.

A Tag

      I'm not a person who is generally interested in tags. However, I spotted one on Ellie's and Autumn's blog recently, that was, shall I say, "open ended." 

Which means that I have the freedom to mine up any random thing about myself, instead of describing the weather outside.

I've simply listed random facts about myself, or things I'd just like to say:

1- My least favorite movie is titled Harry and The Hendersons. With a plot concerning “Sasquatch,” and lady with fluffy eighties-hair, it kind of figures, right? It should figure. Don’t ask me why we watched that particular specimen.

2-  The most ironic thing I have seen lately, is an advertisement for a tutoring service in the paper. The “student of the month,” was pictured wearing a shirt with the following phrase printed on it:

                           spelling iss mi besst subjekt

Or something to that effect. Oh attitude shirts... They always catch up to you eventually.

2. I often judge a book by its cover. 

3. I like listening to harpsichord concertos, among other things, when I exercise.

4. I’m slightly annoyed when I’m browsing blogs, and some music starts blaring- and I can’t figure out which page it's coming from.

5. The one book I would like to recommend to everyone at the moment is titled The Fallacy Detective, by brothers Nathaniel and Hans Bluedorn. Yes, it does have a hound in a trench coat (with a magnifying glass) on the cover, but that's no excuse to not read the book. After reading a good part of that text, my family has discovered how amusing (and easy) it is to spot logical fallacies made by politicians, the general populace, and ourselves. Despite the hound in the trench coat, this book has no age limit.
